At Decarbonize Initiative, our work goes beyond research and advocacy, we are actively supporting small-scale farmers to build resilient, sustainable livelihoods while restoring the environment.
Across four farms, we have supported the planting of over 700 Hass avocado trees, 250 macadamia trees, more than 4,000 eucalyptus trees, wheat, and maize within the last year. These efforts are designed not only to promote reforestation but also to create long-term income streams for farmers. Hass avocados, which sell for approximately Ksh. 15 per kilogram, and macadamia nuts, which sell for between Ksh. 150–200 per kilogram, offer farmers access to high-value markets while encouraging climate-smart agricultural practices.
In addition, we actively contribute to the production of over 15 metric tonnes of tea per quarter, working closely with small-scale farmers to improve yields and maintain consistent production. This supports both food security and household incomes, ensuring that farming remains a viable and sustainable livelihood.
Our approach integrates reforestation and regenerative agriculture, helping farmers diversify crops, improve soil health, and reduce environmental degradation. By promoting tree-based farming systems and sustainable practices, we are restoring ecosystems while strengthening community resilience.
Ultimately, our work is about creating systems where people, livelihoods, and the environment thrive together, ensuring that small-scale farmers are not only part of the solution to climate change, but also beneficiaries of a more sustainable future.
