Hack the Fork Comes to Kenya: Building the Future of Food with Artificial Intelligence
We are excited to announce the Kenya Edition of Hack the Fork, a 36-hour hackathon bringing together university students and young innovators to explore how artificial intelligence can help shape the future of alternative proteins and sustainable food systems.
Taking place in November 2026 at the University of Nairobi, Hack the Fork Kenya will challenge participants to work in multidisciplinary teams, develop innovative ideas and build practical solutions to real-world challenges facing the alternative protein sector.
Artificial Intelligence Meets Food Innovation
The global food system is changing rapidly, creating opportunities to rethink how food is produced, distributed and consumed. At the same time, advances in artificial intelligence are giving innovators new tools to tackle complex challenges across food systems.
Hack the Fork will give participants the opportunity to apply these tools to alternative proteins and food innovation.
Over the course of the hackathon, participants will work alongside fellow students, mentors and industry experts to develop and refine their ideas before presenting their solutions.
No prior expertise in artificial intelligence or alternative proteins is required. The hackathon is designed to bring together participants from different academic and professional backgrounds and provide them with the resources and support needed to participate.
US$1,000 Prize Pool
Participants will have the opportunity to compete for a US$1,000 prize pool, while gaining practical experience, meeting other ambitious students and innovators, and developing solutions with the potential to contribute to a more sustainable food system.
Beyond the competition, Hack the Fork is intended to create a space for learning, collaboration and experimentation at the intersection of technology, sustainability and food.
Bringing Hack the Fork to Nairobi
The Kenya Edition is being organised by Decarbonize Initiative, in collaboration with the Environmental and Biosystems Engineering Students Association (EBESA) and the Kenya Youth Parliament for Water (KYPW), with the event taking place at the University of Nairobi.
Through this collaboration, we hope to create an interdisciplinary platform where students interested in technology, engineering, agriculture, food systems, sustainability, entrepreneurship and related fields can come together to build solutions for the future.
